But really, there is so much to learn in every experience — sometimes you just have to look for it. You only get out of the experience the equivalent of what you give to it.

As they say, it’s not about what you know but rather who you know. While that’s not entirely true, it certainly helps to cast your net far and wide, leveraging your connections to learn about different roles and industries, get in front of the right people, and work with real human connection rather than submitting your resume robotically online. Reach out to alumni, beef up your LinkedIn profile and connect with relevant people, attend networking events, and (perhaps most importantly) seek informational interviews. That means requesting short meetings with more established people in your industry of interest to learn about their path and insights, which can sometimes lead to job opportunities.

Once you’re in the job, prove yourself a valuable asset. Be teachable, build relationships, seek challenges, nurture your independence, reflect on your performance, ask for feedback, and adapt.
